Zara Terra Profonda vs Energetically New York Elixir – Which Fresh Woody Fragrance Is Better?

Quick Summary

Zara Terra Profonda Black Fig & Basil and Energetically New York Elixir bottles side by side

Zara Terra Profonda Black Fig & Basil and Zara Energetically New York Elixir may look quite similar at first.

They both have a fresh, woody character, and the bottles have a very similar shape. Both were also created with the involvement of Jo Malone CBE.

But after wearing them on different days and switching back and forth between the two, I found myself thinking about them very differently.

Terra Profonda is built around the green character of fig leaf and basil, with soft blonde woods underneath. To me, it smells like being somewhere with a lot of plants around you, or simply being outside on a fresh day.

Energetically New York Elixir has a smoother feel. Cardamom, sandalwood, and suede give it a cleaner and more polished woody character.

I can easily see myself wearing both as everyday fragrances, but I rarely reach for them for the same reason. Terra Profonda is what I would wear on a relaxed, natural day. New York Elixir is the one I would pick when I want to feel a little more put together.

If I could only keep one, I would go with Zara Terra Profonda Black Fig & Basil.

Not because I think it is objectively better, but simply because it fits my taste better and feels like something I would actually wear more often.

Same Bottle, Different Personalities

The funny thing is that the bottles were actually what made me want to compare these two in the first place.

Put them next to each other and the silhouettes look surprisingly close. If you are not familiar with Zara fragrances, you could easily assume they came from the same collection.

Terra Profonda has the dark black bottle, while Energetically New York Elixir uses a very similar shape.

When I first saw them together, I remember thinking:

“These bottles look almost the same. I wonder if the fragrances are similar too.”

There are definitely some similarities.

Both have a fresh, woody character, and both were created with the involvement of Jo Malone CBE.

Terra Profonda Black Fig & Basil was created with Jo Malone CBE and was inspired by The Art of Becoming, as described by Zara.

Energetically New York Elixir was also created with Jo Malone CBE and is part of Zara’s Olfactive Nº01 Elixir line, designed to capture the energy and sophisticated atmosphere of New York.

They are not actually from the same collection, though.

That was probably the part I found most interesting. You have two fragrances with a similar bottle design and the same perfumer involved, yet they end up feeling quite different once they are on skin.

So I wasn’t really interested in deciding which one was “better.” I wanted to see how different two fragrances could feel despite looking so similar on the shelf.

What Do They Have in Common?

After going back and forth between them, the obvious connection is the fresh and woody character.

Neither one feels heavy or particularly rich, and the woody base gives both fragrances their overall shape.

The freshness, though, is where things start to separate.

Terra Profonda feels much greener to me. It has that leafy, plant-like quality that makes me think of being outdoors.

New York Elixir has a cleaner, more modern kind of freshness. The coolness of cardamom combined with the woods gives it a different feel altogether.

So yes, I would describe both as fresh woody fragrances, but I wouldn’t put them in the same mental category.

On paper, they look like they should have more in common than they actually do. Once I started wearing them, the differences became much easier to notice.

First Impression: Green Nature vs Clean City

The biggest difference I noticed right away was the green fig leaf character of Terra Profonda.

Despite having Black Fig in the name, I didn’t get a sweet fig fruit smell from the first spray.

It smelled much more like the leaves of a fig tree.

There is a slight bitterness to it, along with that vivid green quality you get from fresh leaves. The basil seems to make the whole thing feel even greener.

I already like green and earthy fragrances, so this part worked for me almost immediately.

What I found interesting was that Zara didn’t take the fig in the obvious sweet, fruity direction. It feels much more like the smell and texture of the plant itself.

(If you enjoy green and earthy fragrances as well, you may also like my Aesop Hwyl review, although Hwyl takes the idea of nature in a much darker and smokier direction.)

Energetically New York Elixir feels more straightforward from the start.

There is a little spice from the cardamom, followed by sandalwood and suede, which give it that clean, smooth woody character.

I sprayed one on each wrist and kept switching between them.

The images in my head were completely different.

Terra Profonda reminded me of being somewhere surrounded by plants.

New York Elixir felt more like walking into a clean hotel lobby with polished wood and soft leather furniture.

That contrast was probably the first moment when I realized these two fragrances were going to be much more different than I initially expected.

Dry Down: Soft Blonde Woods vs Sandalwood

The longer I wore them, the clearer the difference became.

After about 20 minutes, the sharper green opening of Terra Profonda starts to calm down.

The blonde woods become more noticeable, and the whole fragrance feels softer.

The word that keeps coming to mind for me is cashmere.

It doesn’t smell like hard, dry wood. Instead, the woody texture feels soft and almost fabric-like against the skin.

New York Elixir takes a smoother route as the sandalwood and suede become more noticeable.

If Terra Profonda feels like touching natural materials with your hands, New York Elixir feels more like polished wood or soft leather.

If I had to describe the two dry downs in the simplest way:

Terra Profonda
→ Soft, creamy blonde woods

Energetically New York Elixir
→ Smooth, polished sandalwood & suede

Both end up in a soft woody place, but they don’t have the same texture on skin.

(If you are more interested in richer sandalwood fragrances, my Serge Lutens Santal Majuscule review offers a very different take on sandalwood, with rose and cocoa adding much more warmth and depth.)

How Do They Feel When You Wear Them?

This is where the difference became more obvious to me than it was from simply looking at the notes.

Terra Profonda doesn’t really feel like it is trying to announce itself.

One thing I noticed after wearing it several times is that once I’m out of the house, I don’t really think about the perfume anymore. It just becomes part of the atmosphere around me.

I like that.

It doesn’t feel like I’m deliberately trying to smell good. It feels more like the fragrance naturally belongs with me.

That is probably why I found it so easy to wear on days when I wasn’t particularly dressed up.

New York Elixir is a little different.

I notice it more when I’m dressed up. It feels like part of the outfit rather than something I happened to spray on before leaving the house.

A clean shirt or a jacket seems to bring out the smooth sandalwood and suede particularly well.

Neither fragrance is especially loud or attention-grabbing.

But they do slightly different jobs.

Terra Profonda disappears into the surroundings in a good way. New York Elixir feels more like it pulls the rest of the outfit together.

I didn’t really understand this difference until I had worn both several times. Reading the notes alone wouldn’t have told me that.

When Would I Choose Each One?

The easiest way for me to separate the two is to think about what kind of day I’m having.

Zara Terra Profonda

I would reach for Terra Profonda on days like:

  • A spring afternoon
  • Going to a café
  • Taking a casual walk
  • A relaxed weekend
  • Spending time with family
  • A day without any special plans

Especially on those days when I don’t want to think too hard about what fragrance to wear.

I don’t need to match it with a particular outfit or think about whether the setting is right. I can just spray it and leave.

Zara Energetically New York Elixir

New York Elixir is the one I would choose when I want to feel a little more put together:

  • Going to work
  • Going out in the city
  • Wearing a shirt or jacket
  • A clean, smart-casual outfit
  • A casual evening occasion
  • A day when I want to make a slightly more sophisticated impression

Both work as everyday fragrances, but “everyday” means something slightly different to me with each one.

Terra Profonda is the fragrance I can grab without thinking.

New York Elixir is more for those days when I am actually paying a little more attention to how I look.

Performance Comparison

Neither of these is a fragrance I would choose if strong projection was the main priority.

Terra Profonda lasted around 5 hours on my skin, while I could still smell it on clothing for around 8 hours.

The projection is fairly soft.

Personally, I think that works in its favor.

If Terra Profonda projected much more strongly, I suspect some of the relaxed, natural feeling I like about it would be lost.

Energetically New York Elixir is also fairly controlled in terms of projection. I did find its opening a little more defined and noticeable than Terra Profonda’s, though.

So if you are looking for something that fills a room or stays powerful all day, neither would be my first recommendation.

Of course, longevity and projection can change quite a bit depending on skin, weather, and how much you spray. If you’re considering either one, I would definitely try it on skin before buying if you can.

Which One Offers Better Value?

Both fragrances have the advantage of Zara’s relatively accessible pricing.

But I don’t think they offer value in exactly the same way.

For Terra Profonda, the biggest advantage is simply how often I can wear it.

I don’t need to wait for a particular occasion. I can wear it to a café, on a walk, during a relaxed weekend, or just when I’m having an ordinary day.

That makes it feel more useful to me than the price alone suggests.

New York Elixir offers a different kind of value.

If you like clean, sophisticated sandalwood and suede fragrances, you’re not buying it simply because it is cheap. You’re getting a fairly specific modern woody style without having to spend much more money.

So, based on my own preferences:

The fragrance I would wear more often → Terra Profonda

If you want a specific modern woody style → Energetically New York Elixir

Final Thoughts

When I first put these two fragrances next to each other, I honestly thought the comparison would be pretty straightforward.

The bottles look similar, both have a fresh woody character, and both were created with the involvement of Jo Malone CBE.

After wearing them back and forth for several days, I ended up finding the comparison much more interesting than I expected.

What stayed with me most was how differently they developed despite those similarities.

Terra Profonda feels natural, relaxed, and easygoing.

New York Elixir feels smoother, cleaner, and more polished.

And somewhere during the comparison, I realized something that applies to fragrances in general:

The fragrance I think is better isn’t always the fragrance I actually wear more.

There are definitely times when New York Elixir feels more polished and sophisticated. If I’m wearing a nice shirt or jacket and heading into the city, I can see why someone might prefer it.

But that’s not really how I use fragrance most of the time.

I tend to spray perfume on ordinary days. Going out for coffee. Taking a walk. Spending time with family. Even just leaving the house without having any particular plans.

And for those moments, Terra Profonda fits me better.

So if I had to buy only one of these two again, I would choose Zara Terra Profonda Black Fig & Basil.

That doesn’t mean I think it is objectively better than Energetically New York Elixir.

If you already love sandalwood, suede, and clean modern woody fragrances, you might actually prefer New York Elixir.

For me, it simply comes down to the kind of atmosphere I want around me most often.

I like fragrances that blend into the day rather than becoming the main event.

And that is why Terra Profonda is my choice between the two.
