Quick Summary
Santal Majuscule by Serge Lutens
Main Notes: Damask Rose / Sandalwood / Cocoa
Longevity: ★★★★☆
Projection: ★★★☆☆
Best Season: Fall, Winter
It has quite strong longevity, but the projection stays relatively soft especially in outdoor environments. It performs much better indoors where the scent can gently surround you. There is no citrus here at all, just a warm smooth and slightly dense composition that fits perfectly with colder fall and winter days.
Intro
Today I’m writing a Santal Majuscule review by Serge Lutens.
If you are into fragrances you have probably already heard of Serge Lutens. But for some people this might still be a completely unfamiliar name.
There are certain fragrance houses that are difficult to describe in simple words. Saying something like it smells good or it feels luxurious is never enough. You really need to understand the philosophy and history behind the brand to fully appreciate it.
And Serge Lutens is exactly that kind of brand.

About Serge Lutens
Serge Lutens is considered one of the most influential names in modern niche perfumery.
The founder Serge Lutens originally came from a background in photography and art direction rather than the fragrance industry. He approached perfumery not as a trained perfumer but as an artist expressing his own visual and emotional world through scent.
His philosophy first made a strong impact in 1992 with Féminité du Bois . At that time cedarwood was rarely used in such a dominant way in women’s fragrances. The scent created a major shift in the industry and is still regarded today as one of the most important works in niche perfumery history.
Later he established his boutique at Palais Royal in Paris and continued releasing highly artistic and unconventional creations. Over time Serge Lutens became known not just as a perfume house but as a brand that tells stories through scent.
Santal Majuscule is one of the clearest examples of that philosophy.
Notes & Accords

Santal Majuscule is built around woody warmth soft spice and a rich rose accord.
The moment you spray it a deep rich rose comes through immediately. After that cocoa adds a slightly bitter softness while sandalwood smooths everything together. The result is a rose that feels almost wrapped in silk extremely soft and almost tactile.

What makes this fragrance so interesting is how simple the structure actually is.
It is mainly built around just three notes Sandalwood, Damask Rose, and Cocoa.
With just these three elements, the balance feels incredibly refined and complete. That is exactly why this fragrance is considered one of the house signature creations.
There is something very sensual about it but not in a youthful or playful way. It feels more like quiet elegance. A person wearing a silk dress or someone in a corduroy coat. Very composed very mature and very refined.
Performance
Longevity: ★★★★☆
Projection: ★★★☆☆
Longevity is quite impressive.
On skin it easily lasts around 24 hours with a soft lingering presence. On clothing it can stay for up to two days. Considering how smooth and gentle the composition is that level of performance is actually quite remarkable.
Another interesting aspect is that the scent does not really evolve much. It stays fairly linear from the first spray to the dry down. What you smell in the opening is pretty much what you get throughout the entire wear.
The projection is not loud at all. Instead it stays close to the skin and diffuses in a very soft and understated way. It is the kind of scent where someone might notice something nice in the air and ask what it is without feeling overwhelmed.
Design & Presentation

The box design is very minimal and fully black which immediately gives a luxurious and refined impression. It is not just smooth but also has a subtle texture that feels premium in hand.
Inside the box the bottle setup is quite different from most fragrances. It comes with a separate pump nozzle system and a lid.
You carefully remove the lid, attach the pump nozzle securely and then lock it in place.

The moment you open it the scent already starts to escape even before spraying.
The liquid itself has a very light almost muted coffee like color and somehow it matches the fragrance perfectly. Just by looking at it you can already get a sense of the scent profile.

The atomizer is black which fits the overall design very well. The bottle is tall and slim which makes it look smaller than it actually is. One thing to be careful about is stability since it can tip over quite easily because of the narrow shape.

Recommendation
This is not a fragrance for teenagers or even most people in their twenties.
It is more suited for those who understand a mature kind of elegance something calm confident and composed.
Santal Majuscule is a unisex fragrance but it leans slightly feminine in character. That said it is still very wearable for men.
It fits best with people who prefer a clean refined style. Think coats tailored outfits and classic silhouettes rather than casual or sporty clothing.
Who will love it?
- Men who wear coats and dress shoes, people who naturally prefer suits and more structured tailoring styles.
- Women who enjoy elegant dresses, especially those who like a clean and refined look, often paired with bold lipstick and minimal but strong styling.
Overall, this fragrance fits people in their 30s and above who prefer a calm and polished presence rather than something loud or playful. It leans more toward elegance and maturity rather than youthful energy.
Who should avoid it?
- Men who prefer casual outfits, streetwear, or styles that emphasize a strong masculine or sporty image.
- Women who enjoy colorful, expressive fashion, or outfits that rely heavily on bold color combinations and playful styling.
This is not a fragrance for people who want something easy or instantly likable. It has a very specific character and needs a certain mindset and style to truly fit.

Final Thoughts
Santal Majuscule is not a fragrance that tries to impress with complexity or loudness.
It is simple but within that simplicity there is elegance and depth.
With just three main notes it manages to create something surprisingly rich smooth and emotional.
It is not a mass appeal fragrance. It feels more personal and more artistic. But if you enjoy the harmony of rose and sandalwood this is definitely a scent worth experiencing at least once.
